Over the last five years DIVORCE has been lucky enough to release three of their albums—Haruspex 7", Weaponry LP, and just recently, the Night Danger LP, which was co-released with the band's own Isolated Now Waves label. The two LPs comprise a double LP series that, in my opinion, represents an essential document of not only the band, but also of the wider avant-punk scene in Canada.

In my continued effort to expose more background on the DIVORCE catalogue, I recently interviewed Jeremy and Nic about the records. Enjoy. And check below for a special offer on the two LP set.

There is a certain low-fi aesthetic at work on many Shearing Pinx recordings, even on your most significant releases. Some critics have faulted you for it, but I think the common opinion is that this raw recording approach has a lot to do with the potency of your sound. I often think of your four track as an essential member of the band. Why is keeping things in the low-fi realm important?

We tend to gravitate more towards the scrappy lo-fi cassette crunch as we feel it's more representative to our true sound: Gnarly, unkempt, unpolished and closer to the live experience. A challenge to the listener, engaging their imagination to become part of the listening experience. Plus, we get to do it ourselves and retain complete control. In the beginning of SHPX we all really loved (+ still do!) bands like Harry Pussy, Sentridoh/Sebadoh, Dead C, Hair Police and of course Eric's Trip and what they could do w/a 4track/lo-fi sound machine, and that common appreciation manifested itself in the band, naturally. Out of the 6 albums we've done half of them were recorded digitally in a studio and the other half on a Tascam. Ultimately cassette 4tracks are our fave! But it's always fun to try something new.

Taken together, Night Danger and Weaponry comprise one of your most epic works (no small feat considering there are close to one hundred SP albums). The records cover a lot of ground, from some of your most experimental and noisy jams to the most memorable noise-pop sing-a-longs. Why does it all fit together so well? Was there a plan or concept going into the project?

There was definitely a plan. The albums were intended to be released as a double lp, so all the sequencing was thought out that way. In reality night danger is sides c and d of a single project. When we began working on a new album back then we realised we wanted to include more aspects of the bands sound that up until that point had remained on cassette and cdr releases. Working away on that idea all the while recording we quickly came to the conclusion to do a double lp. The rest is history

From the beginning, Rick White's name was on top of the list for jacket art. I think we all saw a connection between Rick's approach with Eric's Trip and Elevator and what you are doing with Shearing Pinx. Can you you talk about that connection and influence?

We have always been huge fans of Rick and his various projects , cannot be understated. I would say his approach is one of the major influences within shearing pinx sound, art , etc. Growing up in rural Canada and finding out about Eric's Trip in the early/mid '90's, it was naturally inspiring as budding ((!)) musicians. When Darcy asked us what we wanted to do with the cover art we sent a list of artists that really we didn't think would actually be taken seriously, like a wish list. Apparently some wishes come true!

What about Vancouver? Maybe I'm projecting too much, but I've always felt like the dirge and chaos of Shearing Pinx was somehow channelling the gritty urban scene in the Downtown Eastside. How does both the Vancouver music scene and the general vibe of the city affect your music?

Yes of course. You can't help but reflect the environment your in as an artist. If you scan the wide spectrum of music in Vancouver you can hear this feeling your talking about. There's always something to feel crazy about good OR bad and you'll see/hear/feel expressions through artistic consciousness. Anyone that thinks the riot last summer was about hockey is an idiot! There is an extreme amount of resentment in this community regarding the cost of living, the treatment of the poor, more bureaucratic red tape than you could imagine stopping you from doing anything remotely fun. When these things are in your mind , in your conversations with neighbors and friends, it becomes a part of you and every action you take.........

I'm really drawn to the Pinx for your take on the more aggressive side of free music. It sometimes reminds me of stuff like Peter Brotzmann (Machine Gun in particular), Weasel Walter, or even the Nihilist Spasm Band. Has this kind of music been an inspiration? Also, how do you make free music fit with punk music both in terms of sound and genre politics?

We do not care about having a certain sound or genre politics. We have a more free approach to music making and it's more on a song by song basis as opposed to the general sound of the band. Although we gravitate more towards heavy, loud and angular sonic freedom. Free music fits with punk music because we love both and more. Improv has always been a part of the band , a large part in fact. If you look at the bulk of our releases you'll find mostly improvisations. Playing with sound is one of the most exciting things you can do as a musician. We have never restricted the creative process by aesthetic lines , this we believe allows for more possibilities.

It sounds strange to say, but the Shearing Pinx is probably one of the earlier avant-punk bands of the new generation of such bands in Canada. Things have certainly gotten weirder in Canada since you started, or at least it's bubbling to the surface, with more tape labels and fringe bands. How have things changed in the last half a decade? What's exciting about Canada right now?

It's been way too long since we've toured across Canada and seen what's happening out there! Honestly, we're probably out of the loop a little bit. A couple years ago, there was a lot to be excited about. Weird Canada is such an important thing, thanks to Aaron Levin et al for doing such a great job!

Label LOVE - Divorce, Bruised Tongue, Midori, Wintage Records & Tapes, Mammoth Cave, Prairie Fire Tapes, Ramshakle Day Parade

Local Label Linx - Thankless, Soldier Pumps, Geographing, Broadway2Boundary, Panospria, Trashtronix/VIDKID all rule.

LOCAL LICKS - Terror Bird, Whip Of The UFO, Androgynous Mind, Heavy Chains, Ahna, Stamina Mantis, Phonecalls (R.I.P.).....,yellow thief, Cascadia, NOISY TITS, Screaming Queens, Velvet Fist,Holzkopf, Von Bingen, Student Teacher, Inherent Vices, Juvenile Hall, Monarch, The Passenger, Forced Laugh, Hole In My Head, Cloudface, Cathar, The Courtneys, Jesse Taylor (SHPX) just put out an amazing comp of local stuff he's been recording for the past couple years called NITE PRISON, named after his studio. Instead of continuing to answer each request individually, I've decided to put together this blog post. Hopefully you will all find it helpful. I've made quite a few records over the years, and I've worked with a number of different plants. After much trial and error, this is what I've come up with. The manufacturing path outlined below is best suited for those of you making records in Canada. If you have any questions or advice to add, please feel free to comment. I'm always looking for ways to improve.

1. Acetates/Plating - Aardvark Mastering
This first step is getting your master made into stampers so that the pressing plant can manufacture the actual record. The process is quite involved, so look on the Aardvark site for specifics. Basically, Paul at Aardvark will make an acetate of your master tape/disc. This will be express shipped to his plater (Mastercraft, I believe) who will then make stampers for the pressing plant. You have a few options through Aardvark, including the choice of a one or two step process. The one step process will save you a few bucks, but the stampers are usually only good for one run (or up to 1000 records).

I have been using Aardvark for years. They are one of the most affordable mastering companies around, and the quality of their work is always fantastic. I've had problems occur in this process that were totally of my own doing. Aardvark have been great to deal with in these situations, usually offering to re-plate even for the smallest issue. Highly recommended. 3-5 weeks turn time.

2. Pressing (labels, test pressings, records) - SAMO

On the Aardvark order form you will have to specify where you want the plates sent to be pressed. There are a number of good plants in the USA and a few in Canada, many of which I have worked with over the years. However, there are a lot of things that can go wrong, so good customer service is essential. I've had many problems over the years. On one of the first records I pressed, the plant got grease all over the labels. It looked awful. They wouldn't return my emails or my calls. In the end I had to pack up a record and write a hand written letter. Not a timely way to deal with such a problem when you have distributors waiting on product.

Anyway, I just started using SAMO. They are a Canadian broker that get their orders manufactured at a plant in California. In the past I've shied away from middlemen, but once I did the math, I had to give them a try. One big cost for making vinyl in Canada is shipping and brokerage from the USA. On a 600 run of LPs it can cost around $600 or more to get them here, especially if you use a plant on the west coast. SAMO gets your order into the country and only charge for shipping from Toronto. All the other costs are comparable to most other plants. And the quality is great, with regular pressings being 145 grams or more (not the case with many plants). And of course, the big selling point with SAMO is customer service. Emails are answered right away. Last minute changes are no problem. I know I'm not the easiest person to deal with when making a record, but I've never had any issues when dealing with this company. Gord (aka Deranged Record boss) is my rep. Great guy. Highly recommended. 2-4 week turn time.

3. Jackets - Imprint

Obviously, there are lots of DIY options for jackets. For 7 inches, a trip to Staples will usually do the trick. You can screen print blank LP jackets, make homemade folder sleeves, glue a photocopy to some old Bee Gees' cover, whatever. But if you need 500+ LP jackets and you want them to be at the standard of most LPs in your collection, I'd recommend Imprint. Like Samo, they are also a broker, but they get their printing done in Montreal. You are are not charged any shipping fees and the turnover is fast. It costs about $1 a jacket. You can't beat that. I even tried to go direct with the plant they use in Montreal, but it was more expensive. Imprint also have great customer service, always letting you know where your order stands. 2 week turn time. Highly recommended.

There you go. Best of luck with your record! If you have questions, get in touch. We finally released our first trailer this week! Here's the official blurb and the mighty clip:

Set in the wilds of Nova Scotia's coastal forests, Lowlife is the surreal tale of one woman’s quest to outlast a living drug. Shooting took place in the icy, unforgiving spring of 2011. Lowlife is Seth Smith's first feature length film and was produced in part by Dog Day, Divorce, Fundog Records, and Yorodeo. The release is scheduled for fall 2012.

For some reason the gods of press were very good to us this week, so check out the Lowlife feature on Weird Canada and and Vice's new blog Noisey.

Of course, the hardest thing about making a movie on your own is the money. The stripped down 80's synth jams he was posting at the time sounded intriguing—my interest was peaked.

As the story goes, Jeff & Jane Hudson spent some time in the late 70s exploring early punk rock in their Boston band The Rentals (not to be confused with that Weezer related 90s outfit) before moving to New York during the fertile years of the No Wave movement in the early 80s. Jeff & Jane quickly carved out their niche, creating music that was detached yet emotive. They utilized drum machines, synthesizers, quick bursts of guitar, and melodic vocals to craft a signature sound as original as anything coming from the best groups of their day. Eventually becoming a New York staple during this era, they'd go on to share bills with the likes of Suicide, Duran Duran, Siouxie & the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch,PIL and many more. But despite being one of the most innovative and compelling bands of the early '80s synth movement, Jeff & Jane's contributions became more and more obscured as the decades passed. Luckily, in early 2011 Captured Tracks and Dark Entries teamed up to reissue the duo's classic 1983 LP 'Flesh' along with select single material and tracks from their 1981 EP 'World Trade'. The reissue brought much deserved attention back to this trailblazing outfit.

And just recently, Halifax's Electric Voice answered the call to step up the Jeff & Jane revival by releasing this killer 12" single, the duo's first new synth based material in decades. The record consists of two tracks, 'In My Car' and 'Computer Jungle', backed with alternate club mixes. These new songs are a throwback to the sound that originally propelled Jeff & Jane to so much success in the early 80's; although, I'm not sure that any of the tracks on their 80's records are quite as infectious. If pushed to find a comparison, I'd say the mix of hook-laden melodies, quirky synth lines, and a darker hidden meaning remind me in ways of Kraftwerk's 80's dance departure 'Computer World', not a bad piece of music to evoke. That being said, all of Jeff & Jane's music, including this new record, clearly stands on its own. The 'In My Car' 12" is pressed on heavy, coloured vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies. Art by Jeff Hudson.

Electric Voice Records
Jeff & Jane Hudson's Official Site
Buy Record From DIVORCE

Li Jianhong - Lovers with Cloisonne Bracelet

I love a good record trade. It's a fantastic way to discover musical gems that for one reason or another didn't make it on my radar. My latest acquisitions are from New York's stellar Tipped Bowler label. A quick preview of their tracks on Soundcloud had me sold; I always have a strong appetite for quality psych noise. Their package arrived today, and the first LP to hit my table was Li Jianhong - Lovers with Cloisonne Bracelet. Athough relatively new to western ears, Li Jianhong is a psych guitarist from China who has been plying his trade for quite some time in both his band 'Second Skin' and through solo work. Lovers with Cloisonne Bracelet consists of one epic track of exquisitely crafted guitar shreddery per side. There are lots of comparisons that immediately come to mind, including Keiji Haino, Loron Connors, Bark Haze, and even DIVORCE artist Gown. Li Jianhong is unique, however, in that he maintains such a curious balance between noise and beauty. At times he evokes an intensity akin to the most ecstatic moments of a classic Hendrix solo, but the music never loses its dream like pulse and drone. Masterful stuff. Highly recommended.

01 Lovers in Misery by Tipped

Lost & Found Xmas Record Sale

Great sale for the shop only (mail order sale to be announced soon).

25% off all distro titles and any 4 label releases for $20!! Somehow the idea came up that DIVORCE do an LP for them. At the time, I was in quite deep with commitments to put out records, so this MCIAA project seemed like a far off possibility. Regardless, they sent the master. I was floored. I played it constantly for a year, hoping they wouldn't lose faith in my promise to get the album done. Needless to say, it finally happened. During this long journey to vinyl, I became even more enamored with the music of these strange brothers. They take what they do seriously and have created one of the most impressive catalogues of any artist or group in experimental music. To coincide with the release of Living on the Invisible Line, they did an interview with me regarding the new record and making music in the outer realms.

Like most of your recent albums, Living on the Invisible Line was recorded in a remote region of the Western Alps. One of the first things that struck me about the record was how much I could hear that vastness, isolation, and beauty reflected in the music. But MCIAA started making music in Torino, a city that you talk about as rapidly decaying (in one way or another). How has your music and outlook on creating changed since the studio moved to the mountains?

Of course moving our recording studio to a remote and isolated zone of the Western Alps, so far from Torino's environment, was definitely a big change. Our so-called "Alien Zone" studio is now located in a place which, from the very beginning, we decided to keep as totally private and secret even to close friends, in order to own a space where to be completely alone and detached from the "outside world". It did not only affected us from the artistic point of view, but maybe even more it opened our personal approach to life in terms of new perspectives. The mountain landscape was not new to us, since we spent many periods of our childhood there, but when we began to feel our hometown Torino as a place getting energetically "empty", due to the quick and inexorable destruction of the early 1900s abandoned factories that represented an immeasurable source of inspiration for us, we felt the need to find a place we could feel at ease again. It might sound strange, but as Torino seemed to become a more "comfortable" place to live in, instead we as artists started feeling ourselves lost in a meaningless and soulless void.
Actually, we must say that our creative process does not depend merely from the outside. In fact it basically comes from the innermost part of ourselves, although the vastness of the mountains helped developing our musical and visual aesthetics into further and still unexplored territories. We always felt that our music, and the process of creating instantaneous musical compositions itself, was connected to the Cosmos and the energies that inhabit space; mountains are sort of bridges running towards the highest dimensions of the Spheres, yet coming from the innermost core of our planet. Exactly the same kind of elements that act in our creative process.

In a recent Wire article you refer to the soulful utterances of Blind Willy Johnson on Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground as an influence on your wordless vocal technique. In my opinion, American blues of that era is some of the most emotionally powerful music ever recorded. Experimental music sometimes fails because it lacks any trace of this kind of soul. Your work, however, has always seemed emotionally charged. Why is that important and how does it happen?

First, thanks for recognizing such emotional charge in our works; we know sometimes people don't get this immediately in our music for the reason of its undeniable "ultra-experimental" nature, and because of the fact that for most of people "experimental" is synonimous of "soulful", a kind of music that MUST have a "scientific-only" approach. On the contrary we totally agree with your point of view: music, be it jazz, blues, classical, punk, noise, ambient or experimental, MUST be "emotional", 'cause music itself is the highest expression of human soul. This is what we look for in all artistic expressions or works of art: pure feeling! Early blues was the purest expression of human existence on Earth, a human chant to the Spheres. This is why we also consider American primitive blues as one of the most soulful and powerful music and art of all times; it is as inspired and heartfelt as the primitive howl of the first man crying at the sky at the beginning of mankind. We feel strictly connected with all forms of archaic and primitive art, 'cause we see in them the strongest relationship with post-modern art. As Roberto once wrote, "all archaic art deals with death, sex, transcendence and Eternity. Anyone who does not look from this perspective cannot understand and appreciate contemporary art, even less pretend to use the term 'avant-garde' without exposing oneself to ridicule".

When it works well, improvisation can bring about some of the most ecstatic results in music. Certain late 60's / early 70's jazz records (Alice Coltrane - Journey into Satchidananda, Pharoah Sanders - Karma, etc) are obvious examples of this approach reaching sublime heights. Of course, the process of spontaneously creating music is as much a learned skill as any other musical technique, but there also seems to be an intangible element at work, almost like something magical manifests itself during these heavy moments. As improvisers, how do you conjure up that magic?

Well, you're naming some of our favourite jazz records and musicians. Most of their records are pure "magic" indeed, and since the beginning we realized that something special would occur any time we did improvise together: it's hard to explain it through words, because it's the combination of many irrational elements that reign over the whole musical creative process. It is like a subtle yet intense force that seems to guide you and the sounds you're playing into a dimension which is "other", in between this world and a place where a stronger energy makes all have a higher meaning and aim.

Being improvisers means to deal constantly with this forces and what is completely unknown, be it outside or inside of yourself: that's the spirit behind our music and art; we are somehow sure that when music will be on something magic will happen and will enlighten new acknowledgments of our souls and of the mysterious universe we are in.

Unlike language, music is neither arbitrary nor a creation of human beings: it preceeded the human world, and could continue to exist without humans.

I have become a huge fan during the process of putting together this LP. Thanks so much. Do you have any additional comments to add with regards to Living on the Invisible Line?

First, we must thank you for the utmost care and devotion you have put in releasing this LP, which we definitely feel as one of MCIAA's most intense works so far. In few words, this is the story of 'Living on the Invisible Line': in early April 2010 we were in our Alien Zone studio in Western Alps, when a huge snowfall took us unexpectedly. Quickly our studio was surrounded by two meters of snow, and we found ourselves even more isolated than usual... the atmosphere was surreal... like being projected into a mesmerizing white painting of abstract expressionism. At that point, it came spontaneous to think of our own lives, as artists struggling everyday against the violent affection of the outside world, trying to remain pure and find a salvation through our own art, as our only defense and only aim. As the one you can see in the back cover picture of this LP, the only thing we could see from our window was a long stalactite of ice... It was like a transparent line where we could see ourselves reflected in, an "invisible line" indeed, and we compared this with the tough way we are going along day by day. We switched the recorder on.

It should be any day now. To those who pre-ordered, sorry for the wait. I'll round up some kind of special gift for all of you. Honestly, it'll be worth the delay. In the meantime, here's some music we've been digging out at the DIVORCE headquarters.....................

London, Ontario's Nihilist Spasm Band have been making free form noise since the mid sixties, meaning they are arguably one of the first actual noise bands in history. They make their own instruments and have been performing every Monday night in their hometown for the last 30 years. All the albums I've heard are no doubt interesting, but if you can find them, the two absolute gems are 'What About Me' (1992) and 'No Record' (1968). http://www3.sympatico.ca/pratten/NSB/

_______

&&<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">lt</span></span>;span class="<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">blsp</span></span>-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">lt</span></span>&<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">lt</span></span>;/span>;a &<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">lt</span></span>;span class="<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">blsp</span></span>-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">href</span></span>&<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">lt</span></span>;/span>="http://opponents.bandcamp.com/album/i-swarm-with-a-thousand-bees">I Swarm With a Thousand Bees by OPPONENTS&&<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">lt</span></span>;span class="<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">blsp</span></span>-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">lt</span></span>&<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">lt</span></span>;/span>;/a>

When I first heard this Brooklyn noise outfit I was reminded of the early work of one of my favorite bands, Zoviet France. Although the approach is different here, The Opponents deliver in drone with a similar gloom and ambience. Perfect music for sitting alone staring into the darkness for hours on end. http://www.opponentsnyc.com/

_______

Big thanks to Jesse Locke and Weird Canada for tipping me off to this one. I just got the LP in the mail today. Kyle Bobby Dunn makes haunting neo-classical drone. Equally informed by modern ambient and minimalist music as it is by traditional classical, his latest album Ways of Meaning is an incredibly rich, profound listen unlike anything I've heard in a longtime. The track above is from an earlier record which I hope to track down ASAP. Settle down and enjoy.

New Arrivals - Oct 6/11

Dropping these choice titles at Lost & Found first thing tomorrow:

TROPICS - Parodia Flare LP (Planet Mu)
DJ DIAMOND - Flight Muzik 2LP (Planet Mu)
T REX - Bolan's Zip Gun LP (Fat Possum)
VERONICA FALLS - S/T (Slumberland)
V/A - Street Music of Yogyakarta LP + 7" (Mississippi)
ARTHUR RUSSELL - Let's Go Swimming 12" (Audika)
ABDUL KARIM KHAN - S/T (Mississippi)
SHIN JOONG HYUN - Beautiful Rivers and Mountians 2LP (Light in the Attic)
HAGAR THE WOMB - A Brighter Shade of Black LP (Mississippi)
FAITH - Subject to Change Plus First Demo LP (Dischord)
BLACK LIPS - Los Valientes Del Mundo LP (In The Red)
BLACK LIPS - Two Million Thousand LP (In The Red)
BLACK LIPS - Good Bad Not Evil LP (In The Red)
BEIRUT - The Rip Tide (Pompeii)

and a few used titles... killer blues...

JUNIOR KIMBROUGH - God Knows I Tried LP (Fat Possum)
PAUL 'WINE' JONES - Mule LP (Fat Possum)
PAUL 'WINE' JONES - Pucker up Buttercup LP (Fat Possum)

As usual, the quantities are super limited. In particular, I'd like to finally make versions of a few early Divorce releases available to the digital world. A lot of these albums were put together in small runs between 50 and 100, and so are long OOP.

I had to dig hard to find a copy of this one. Here we have the first of two Shit Cook EPs. Shit Cook was a solo noise/vocal project by yours truly. Although I spent hours locked in a jam spot obsessing over these and other sounds, I was only ever able to muster the spiritual fortitude to play two shows. The experience of a live audience coupled with the intensity of this music was always too overwhelming. The final performance resulted in me practically destroying a vintage 1975 Stratocaster (and my left hand) with a butcher knife. This thing could never happen again. I wasn't cut out for the long haul of the noise game, but I sure put all my soul into this music at the time. Enjoy.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lvlgn5

Shin Joong Hyun

Here's another gem I unearthed in my ordering marathon this weekend. Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea’s Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974 comes to us by way of the prolific Light In The Attic label out of Seattle. This beautifully packaged 2LP showcases a diversity of highlights from singer, guitarist, arranger, and producer Shin Joong Hyun's work. His early music was inspired by the American jazz and soul he heard on US Army radio in South Korea, but as his career progressed, the psychedelia of 60's rock took hold of his sound. The resulting mix of influences from Korean pop to Jimi Hendrix and LSD culture gave way to one of the most unique pop sounds of the time, despite being far from Western ears. And as the story goes, in the early 70's The Korean government became increasingly concerned about Shin psychedelic offerings and lifestyle. To test his patriotism, dictator Park Chung Hee asked him to write a song in praise of the president. Shin refused and instead wrote Beautiful River and Mountains about the beauty of Korea. Over the next years he was harassed incessantly by the police until in '75 he was arrested, locked up, and tortured. Serious consequences for rock and roll.

Abdul Karim Khan

I took the summer off from ordering new records for the distro and the shop, so I was especially psyched to start digging through the new wholesale lists today. There will certainly be lots of interesting titles coming in over the next few weeks. I'll try to post info on a few of those records on this blog. To start, here's a sample of Indian classical singer Abdul Karim Khan. Mississippi and Canary just reissued 10 ragas from a collection of 78"s recorded around 1934-35. The haunting quality of these old recordings is only magnified by Abdul Karim Khan's sublime, soulful performances. This is truly a heavy listen that transcends time and culture.
